Homemade Bath Toys

Sometimes it's as easy to please baby with an empty box as it is with an expensive gift. Not surprisingly, the same principle applies to bath toys. Save yourself the cost of buying new toys and make them instead using common household finds.

Here are a few ideas and suggestions with homemade bath toys:

  1. Plastic honey bear: When you empty your next honey bear, clean the container thoroughly, fill it with warm water and watch baby squeeze and squirt.
  2. Cupcake pan: Use a lightweight metal pan to make water cakes, singing "Happy Birthday" and blowing out imaginary candles when cakes are “baked.”
  3. Plastic storage containers: These safe, unbreakable containers (with or without lids) can be used to fill and pour. String a few together for a bath train. They are also handy for rinsing.
  4. Plastic shampoo bottles: Clean an empty shampoo bottle; fill with warm water and let baby play at washing hair.
  5. Plastic yogurt containers: Clean yogurt containers and punch small holes in the tops or bottoms. Fill with water to sprinkle bathwater with “salt and pepper,” telling baby you are making bath soup.
  6. Kitchen utensils: Use a plastic spatula, sieve, funnel, colander, measuring cups, measuring spoons and ladles (nothing pointed or sharp!) for endless bath-time fun.
  7. Watering can: Turn the bath into a garden and let baby water it using a clean plastic watering can (or ironing spritzer). Sprinkle water on baby to help baby grow.
