Types of Spas

All spas are not the same. In fact, there are many different kinds of spas, each serving different needs. At Spa Finder, we have organized spas into the following eight categories:

Destination Spa
Provides a health-renewing experience and inspires guests to healthier, more joyous living. Dedicated education programs, physical fitness activities, professionally administered spa services and healthful spa cuisine are the heart and soul of a Destination Spa program.

Resort Spa
Located on the grounds of vacation resorts. They are places where treatments for mind, body, and spirit are offered to complement such resort activities as golf, tennis, horseback riding, and water sports. Healthful spa cuisine is on the menu, but so is traditional fare and alcohol. In the evenings, guests can enjoy resort pastimes like dancing and live entertainment. Children's programs are also offered.

Wellness Spa
A special facility that addresses each guest's specific health issues. This kind of retreat welcomes guests with health problems as well as those who are interested in learning how to live healthier lives. Some Wellness Spas follow a traditional medical model while others use a holistic approach.

Weight Management Spa
Spas that specialize in lifestyle change for weight loss and weight maintenance. Most of these spas are medically oriented and include physician supervision.

Spas Abroad
These spas are as varied as the cultures in which they are found. Many European spas retain an Old World elegance and a leisurely pace, while spas in Asia and other parts of the world make creative use of indigenous design and healing traditions.

Day Spa
These spas are designed to provide a healing, beautifying, or pampering experience in a short period of time. Guests may book individual treatments that generally last for an hour or a package of treatments that may take up to a whole day. Found throughout North America today, Day Spas are freestanding or located in health clubs, hotels, and department stores.

Medical Spa
This type of spa has on its staff both medical and spa professionals whose primary purpose is to provide comprehensive medical care in an environment that integrates spa services, therapies, and treatments.

Mineral Springs Spa
These spas offer an on-site source of natural mineral, thermal, or sea water used in hydrotherapy treatments.
